Code Enforcement

MACEO

The Village of Lake Orion Code Enforcement Division is a proud member of Michigan Association of Code Enforcement Officers (MACEO).  Code Enforcement works to keep our neighborhoods clean, safe, and welcoming. We apply the Village Code fairly and consistently, focusing on education and voluntary compliance first. Rather than focusing on penalties, our priority is to work with the community to preserve a safe and attractive environment we can all enjoy.  Our team investigates concerns such as property maintenance, high grass and weeds, trash/debris, signage, parking on lawns, permits, and construction without approval.

If you receive a notice, it will explain what needs to be fixed, the timeline to comply, and how to contact us with questions. Most issues are resolved quickly once owners understand the requirements. When necessary, we may issue citations or take further action, but our goal is always to help you bring your property into compliance.

  • You noticed a potential violation and want to report it. (Please attach photos if possible)

  • You received a notice and have questions or need more time.

  • You’re planning a project and want to understand permit/zoning rules.

Together, we can protect property values, public safety, and community pride in Lake Orion.

What We Do

  • Property maintenance (exterior condition, peeling paint, broken fences, unsafe structures)

  • Nuisances (trash, debris, inoperable or unlicensed vehicles, noise)

  • Overgrowth (grass/weeds over height limits)

  • Zoning & land use (home businesses, setbacks, parking on lawns)

  • Sign compliance (temporary/permanent signs)

  • Construction & permits (work without permits, right-of-way issues)

How the Process Works

  • Report/Observe – We receive a complaint or observe a violation.

  • Inspect – An officer inspects and documents the condition.

  • Notice – A written notice explains the issue, how to fix it, and a compliance deadline.

  • Re-inspect – We check back after the deadline.

  • Resolve – Most cases close with voluntary compliance. If not, citations or further remedies may follow.
