About Planning and Zoning

The Village Manager is the Zoning Administrator for the Village of Lake Orion.  The Village contracts with the planning firm McKenna of Northville, Michigan, to provide planning and zoning services for the village.

Planning and zoning are two ways in which a community can provide for sustainable and orderly development.  The Master Plan is the long-term policy document that guides future development.  The Zoning ordinance is the law that regulates present-day development and is based on the Master Plan that preceded it.  The Master Plan is visionary, flexible, and informed by public participation.  The Zoning Ordinance is practical, firm, and applied consistently and fairly to all properties.  Together, these documents help shape our community in a way that benefits residents, developers, businesses, and the environment alike.
